August 5, 2021
by Justin Siu
We just sent out the fourth edition of Compliance Watch – Legion’s quarterly bulletin about key changes in compliance rules. It includes information and resource links to help you monitor new employment laws and make it easier to manage and maintain compliance.
In this edition, recent and planned updates in predictive scheduling, COVID-19 paid sick leave, and minimum wages.
NYC Fair Workweek Law Updates for Fast-Food Workers
Beginning September 2, 2021, New York City will begin enforcing “just cause” protections for fast-food workers that went into effect on July 4, 2021. As discussed in the last Compliance Watch bulletin, under this law, fast-food employers cannot fire certain workers or reduce workers’ hours by more than 15% of their regular schedules without “just cause.”
Legion’s AI-powered workforce management platform provides comprehensive coverage of predictive scheduling compliance per city and state-specific laws.
See our blog post on predictive scheduling to learn more about the predictive scheduling rules in effect in these and other cities and states.
COVID-19 Vaccination Paid Leave Continues
In March 2021, New York and California passed laws granting employees paid sick leave for reasons related to COVID-19, including paid time off for employees to get vaccinated. These state and some local COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave requirements remain in effect this summer.
The Legion Time and Attendance module provides self-service admin configurations for rules covering time off, hazard pay, and other custom pay to meet city- and state-specific sick leave and hazard pay requirements.
Minimum Wage Updates
Minimum wage adjustments typically take effect in January, March, July, and December. Here is the list of states and some major cities that have upcoming minimum wage increases.
Connecticut
On August 1, 2021, the minimum wage is set to increase statewide from $12 to $13.
Florida
On September 30, 2021, the minimum wage is set to increase statewide from $8.65 to $10.
Legion WFM supports loading a minimum wage for both cities and states, and the wage can be used to ensure employers are staying compliant with the rules in their locations.
