May 16, 2024
by Justin Siu
We just sent out the latest edition of Compliance Watch—Legion’s quarterly bulletin about key changes in compliance rules. It includes information and resource links to help you monitor new employment laws and make managing and maintaining compliance easier.
This edition covers recent and planned minimum wage, scheduling updates, overtime, and employee leave laws updates.
Minimum Wage
Minimum wage adjustments typically take effect in January, March, July, and December. See which states and major cities have upcoming minimum wage changes. Download the Compliance Watch for the complete list here.
How Can Legion Help with Minimum Wage Changes
Legion WFM allows employers to load minimum wages for cities and states. Legion WFM uses that wage to help managers comply with local laws by only giving employees shift offers for locations where their pay rate is greater than the minimum wage. Additionally, when managers manually add shifts for employees at other locations, Legion WFM automatically flags shifts when there may be a pay-rate violation based on the minimum wage.
Scheduling Updates
Effective July 1, 2024, covered employers in Renton, Washington, must, before hiring
additional employees, temps, or subcontractors, offer additional hours of work to existing employees.
How Can Legion Help With Scheduling?
Customers can communicate with employees via newsfeed or chat when consistent hours are available to existing employees. Managers can also create smart template shifts without assigning an employee for such hours to ensure that the hours are in the schedule each week.
Employee Leave Law Updates
In January 2024, some states will require employers to make changes to their employee leave.

How Can Legion Help With Employee Leave Law Updates?
With the Legion Time Off Management module, employers can effortlessly configure accrual distribution methods and quantities in the Legion WFM Control Center. This means you have complete control over how time off is earned and allocated within your organization. The accrual rules are highly flexible, where the rules for specific time-off reasons are configured at the employee group level. This level of customization allows you to tailor your time off policies to suit the unique needs of your workforce.
In addition to setting up accrual rules, Legion lets clients define which pay types contribute to the accrual total. This feature empowers you to seamlessly align your time off accruals with your payroll processes, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
Legion’s user-friendly approach extends to your employees as well. Through the mobile app or web console, they can easily access their accrual balance and history, submit time off requests, and track the status of those requests directly from their profile. This self-service capability puts employees in the driver’s seat, enhancing transparency and streamlining the time off request process.
Legion’s Time Off Management module provides a powerful tool for managers to assess and manage employee time off requests. Managers can review requests and make informed decisions based on their location’s staffing needs. This ensures that your organization remains agile and responsive to your workforce’s demands while maintaining operational efficiency.
Overtime Eligibility
Effective July 1, 2024, the minimum salary employers must pay their exempt employees will increase to $844 per week/$43,888 per year (up from $684 per week/$35,568 per year) under a new US Department of Labor regulation issued on April 26, 2024. This amount will increase on a set schedule defined by the DOL. Employers must pay at least this amount on a salary basis (in addition to satisfying job-duties requirements) to maintain the overtime-exempt status of employees under the “white collar” (administrative, executive, and professional) exemptions. How Can Legion Help?
Customers can send exempt status to Legion in the employee record via HR integration. The system can automatically schedule employees and assess the correct amount of overtime based on exempt status. Additionally, the system can calculate the correct overtime hours when computing pay.
